Description

The Director of Global Education and Service Learning provides visionary leadership in the areas of study abroad, off-campus academic programming, international student services, and service learning. This newly created position promotes global education and service learning to students, faculty, parents, and domestic/international organizations by identifying strategic direction and initiatives, evaluating and implementing best practices, and assessing programs and services to ensure that the College?s goals are achieved. The Director facilitates intercultural study and experiential learning for both domestic and international students, partnering with faculty to develop off-campus academic programming that is diverse in topic, locale, discipline, and student audience. This is a leadership position in the Center for Professional, Service, and Global Engagement (PSGE), reporting to the Assistant Dean of Academic Advising and Experiential Learning, and supervising the Global Education and Service Learning Advisor.

Specific Responsibilities

Global Education:

  • Develops and implements a comprehensive and strategic assessment plan to include: creation of enhanced mission; vision, goals, and outcomes to better align with the College?s mission and Organizing Principle and Strategic Framework; evaluation of current programs and services to determine areas of strength, weakness, and opportunity; and, incorporation of best practices in global education culled from other residential liberal arts colleges.
  • Provides visionary leadership and budgetary oversight for the functional areas of study abroad, academic off-campus programming, and international student services.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal and state immigration requirements for international students, and all international requirements for domestic students traveling abroad; acts as the College administrator for SEVIS.
  • Provides direction, interpretation, and guidance for all non-immigrant matters pertaining to foreign exchange of students, faculty, researchers, and special guests in attendance at the College.
  • Partners with faculty to assist them in designing, developing, and launching off-campus academic programs during January Term that represent the intersection of faculty interest, student demand, geographic variety, and cost efficiency.
  • Ensures that all faculty, staff, and students understand and comply with relevant College policies and procedures, including those associated with risk management and liability.
  • Actively cultivates opportunities for students to participate in programs for both international and graduate study abroad. Coordinates the collection and dissemination of information about international scholarships and fellowships.
  • Creates and implements a Global Education Advisory Committee comprised of faculty, staff, and students to assist in providing insight, feedback, and direction to global education programs and services.
  • Offers professional development opportunities to campus administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure the best possible experience for the College?s international student population.
  • Collaborates with the Admissions Office to assist in the recruitment and matriculation of international students; and to provide expertise to inform the enrollment strategy for international students.
  • Collaborates with the First Year Experience Office to offer fall and spring orientation programs customized for international students. Assists the FYE Office in advocating for and assuring the smooth transition of international students in the larger campus community.
  • Provides transportation occasionally to accommodate the needs of international students.

Service Learning:

  • Develops and implements a strategic and coordinated approach for service learning across the campus based on the theme of ?knowledge in service to society.? The resulting assessment plan is to include: creation of enhanced mission, vision, goals, and outcomes to better align with the College?s mission and Organizing Principle and Strategic Framework; evaluation of current programs and services to determine areas of strength, weakness, and opportunity; and the incorporation of best practices in community engagement culled from other residential liberal arts colleges.
  • Provides visionary leadership and budgetary oversight for service learning and its expression in local, national, and international communities.
  • Facilitates faculty efforts, both on and off campus, to incorporate service learning and community-based research into the curriculum.
  • Actively cultivates opportunities for service learning experiences that promote the College?s mission locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Creates and implements a Campus Council on Community Engagement comprised of leaders in curricular and co-curricular civic activities to promote community engagement as a pillar of experiential learning.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master?s degree in international education, international affairs, public administration, higher education administration, or related field, plus at least five years of related experience.
  • Proven leadership experience in the areas of global education, community engagement, employment abroad, and advising.
  • Applied knowledge of federal and state immigration requirements; up-to-date training in SEVIS.
  • Significant experience working with diverse audiences, including students, staff, faculty, employers, alumni, and so forth.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; experience giving presentations.
  • Fluency or proficiency in a language other than English.
  • Computer knowledge and experience using Windows-based software.
  • Valid driver?s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency status.
  • At least 10 years of related experience, preferably in higher education.
  • Proven leadership experience in international exchange associations.
  • Experience in cross-cultural training, curriculum development, and teaching.
  • Experience in marketing including print, online, and social media development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of a residential, liberal arts college.
  • Experience living, working, and/or studying abroad.
  • Computer knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; experience using databases and publishing programs; experience using online resources pertaining to global education and service learning.
