In recent times, there has been a slight flutter of activities observed in the real estate sector. The slowing down of foreclosures has paved way for improved home prices and a surge of life within the almost lifeless state of construction of new properties. Could it be that the housing market is finally seeing a ray of hope amidst the darkened clouds of troubled economy?
Well, then, if that is the case, there is a lot of hope for the people in so many ways. Like, for example, there will be a definite boost in jobs in the field of construction! That spells optimism for the construction laborers, the civil engineers, the architects, the landscape designers, the persons working in the clerical cadre in the offices, the accountants, the builders, the engineers, the promoters, the real estate agents, the furniture sector, the plumbers, etc. The estimated number of people that will be employed as a result of the improved housing market may well be almost forty thousand and this will bring them a lot of cheer.
The home owners have been a depressed lot as far as past decisions taken by the reigning government have been concerned. Most of them have been very much disappointed with the way the Federal Reserve has been keeping its printing presses working overtime in order to save the financial situation in the U.S. and to perk up the state of the stumbling economy, but doing nothing much about the sorry state of affairs as regards the homeowners? mortgage debts. For, only about twenty five percent of the total people that applied for financial help received permanent aid with their outstanding loans under the modification of mortgage terms sponsored by theU.S.government, while banks were favored for their working in this regard. Although the limited aid program was introduced, only the people that befitted the ?responsible borrowers? image and fifty percent of the borrowers that faced foreclosures benefited from the same, while millions of people suffered; not being financially helped by the government; losing their homes, despite the fact that hundreds of billions of dollars had been allocated in order that mortgage loans may be bought. Loans that could not be repaid were rescheduled, instead of the government stepping in and taking control by purchasing them. Mortgage companies provided inadequate funds and when the same was brought to the notice of the administration, it hardly paid urgent heed to the serious issue. In recent times, there has been an increase in the number of people that are being helped in their debt-issues, but the helping hand has certainly taken its time to extend support. For, in the meantime, about thirty percent of the people that did not receive the above-mentioned government aid have been left staring at home-foreclosures, or are being filed for bankruptcy or have even lost their homes. Consequently, there may be bitterness in the people?s minds and they will certainly think twice before casting their votes in favor of the presently reigning government again.
A few days ago, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposed new mortgage servicing rules that aim to benefit borrowers by eliminating surprises and run-arounds. Could this prove to be a fruitful step in the brightening of the future of the real estate sector?

Standing out in a crowded marketplace isn?t always easy. And these days, people have seen it all, which means you might only get ahead if you use a compelling and unique approach like Pat Lencioni?s to present your ideas.
Several years ago, Mr. Lencioni, 44 years old, of Lafayette, Calif., was a Bain & Co. consultant who loved writing screenplays and fiction pieces on the side. He didn?t move to Hollywood or New York City to pursue his passion.
Instead, Mr. Lencioni stayed where he was?in the business world?and used his talent to break out of the typical management-consultant mold. He began writing business books that read like novels and featured real characters to which textbook- and theory-fatigued readers could relate. In ?The Five Dysfunctions of a Team,? for example, the fictional DecisionTech?s new CEO, Kathryn, must unite a fractured executive team.
Many say Mr. Lencioni?s parables have sold over 2.5 million copies because they attract people who need to be better managers but don?t want to read a traditional business book to do it. ?The plot-driven approach makes people want to read to the end,? says Mr. Lencioni. ?Readers are also more comfortable passing the books on to friends because they personally enjoyed them and were able to learn without a lot of effort.?
So, how do you infuse your day with creativity if it?s not your natural strong suit?
First, block out some time on your calendar to think about it. When you set aside time to do something, you elevate its importance in your mind.
Practice clearing your head of all of your everyday concerns, turn on some music, and let your mind wander. If you?re having trouble letting go, ask one of your artistic friends what she does to get in the right frame of mind and try adapting that technique to make it your own.
It also helps to look at your life and business from a different perspective. In providing career advice during this recession, for instance, I often pretended I was the person I needed to reach?a reader who was out of work. I asked myself, ?What information do I need right now, and how would I best like to receive it??
If your daily reading consists of one paper or online publication and Google news, you might try expanding your horizons.
In particular, today?s literary fiction and narrative nonfiction books are often worded so eloquently that they can?t help but inspire you to express yourself in a more creative way.
If you read before going to sleep, be sure to keep a pen and a notebook by your bed to jot down ideas that come to you in the middle of the night.
You might also want to start carrying a pad and pencil with you when you commute or travel. Inevitably you?ll overhear or see something that provokes an interesting train of thought.
Mr. Lencioni suggests forcing yourself into an uncomfortable situation to get your mind going?like doing manual labor if you?re a high-ranking executive, for example.
Sometimes just getting out of your comfort zone can spark creative ideas. ?And finally,? he says, ?you have to be willing to throw stupid ideas out [there], or ideas that no one believes in but you.?
Recognize that creativity doesn?t understand deadlines. Because you can?t depend on a terrific idea to show up at a certain point, you might try to build in long timelines for projects that require creative zeal and try not to put a lot of pressure on yourself.
?My best insights don?t usually show up when I?m sitting at my computer waiting for them,? says Mr. Lencioni. ?I?ll usually be jogging or in the shower, or out in the public where my creative mind is stimulated by watching others.?
Once you?ve begun to think more creatively, look for ways to apply this change at work, from suggesting new projects to discussing projects in a new way.

NEW YORK, NY ? (Marketwire) ? 08/16/12 ? Consumers use the Internet to obtain information about all kinds of products and services, ranging from the best local restaurants to the most reputable local medical practices. According to new data, however, real estate represents one of the most significant sources of online search inquiries, with ?homes for sale? ranking as one of the top queries in cities throughout the nation. As such, real estate agents increasingly depend on the Internet to generate leads, to attract clients, to sell homes, and ultimately to make a profit ? which is why more and more realtors are reaching out to professional reputation defense companies, like ReputationChanger.com.
ReputationChanger.com has responded to these new real estate search trends with a statement to the press, in which company CEO Cliff Stein says realtors can benefit from reputation management in a number of ways. ?The most obvious benefit that a company like ReputationChanger.com can offer to real estate agents is brand enhancement,? he observes. ?When you are an agent, using your own name and reputation to attract customers, you are essentially your own brand ? and it is important for that brand to continually shine.?
Stein says that one of the most important things a real estate agent can do is ensure that he or she is making a strong first impression on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. ?When someone wants to buy a home in your city, they are probably going to start the process with a quick Google search for local online realtors,? Stein says. ?If yours is the first name that shows up on Google?s search results page, you?re obviously going to get some serious business. If your name is relegated to the sixth or seventh page, however, then the search engines aren?t really helping you much at all. Ultimately, very few online search engine users ever click past the first page, much less all the way to the seventh.?
According to Stein, ReputationChanger.com can help realtors put their best face forward by ranking high atop local Google search listings. The services offered to realtors do not end there, however.
?The flipside is that a real estate agent does have good Google rankings, but for all the wrong reasons,? Stein shares. ?For example, let?s say a client searches for your name, and the first thing that comes up is a consumer review, which says that you don?t have very good service or people skills. Or worse, the review might say that you?re dishonest, that you rip people off.?
Stein says these negative online listings afflict realtors all the time, often with no factual basis whatsoever. ?The scary thing about the Internet is that people can say whatever they want, whenever they want, and veracity does not factor in,? he explains. ?Those negative online listings may come from a consumer who just happened to catch you on a bad day. They may also be planted by a competitor, or by a former employee. The point is, no real estate agent is exempt from them, and the damage they do to your reputation can be extreme.?
ReputationChanger.com is a company that seeks to provide solutions for these Internet defamation problems. ?At ReputationChanger.com, we believe no person should be powerless against online rumors, especially when they are duplicitous and damaging,? Stein remarks. ?We provide solutions to real estate agents, as well as doctors, online marketers, lawyers, and professionals of all stripes.?
ReptuationChanger.com cannot prevent people from lodging unfavorable reviews or leaving defamatory comments, Stein is quick to say, but it can help to neutralize the impact of these listings. ?As we seek to elevate a client?s positive assets to the top of the Google search results page, we also try to push these negatives to the third or fourth page,? he notes. ?In effect, we try to brand the real estate agent as honest and reputable, which can go a long way toward attracting clients and closing sales.?
ABOUT:
Known as the world?s #1 online reputation management agency, ReputationChanger.com was founded in 2009 by a team of online sales and marketing professionals, as well as SEO and social media experts. The company is passionate about giving individuals and corporations control over how they are portrayed on the Web. ReputationChanger.com is led by CEO Cliff Stein, and has a client list that includes elected officials, Fortune 500 brands, small businesses, medical practices, law firms, and more.

Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez celebrates his first career no-hitter Wednesday. Hernandez stuck out 12.
By TIM BOOTH
updated 8:00 p.m. ET Aug. 15, 2012
SEATTLE - King Felix now has a crowning achievement.
Felix Hernandez pitched the Seattle Mariners' first perfect game and the 23rd in baseball history, overpowering the Tampa Bay Rays in a brilliant 1-0 victory Wednesday.
The 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner has long talked of his desire to achieve pitching perfection. He finally accomplished it against the Rays, striking out the side twice and finishing with 12 strikeouts.
It was the third perfect game in baseball this season ? a first ? joining gems by Chicago's Philip Humber against the Mariners in April and San Francisco's Matt Cain versus Houston in June. More than half of all perfectos ? 12 ? have come in the last 25 seasons.
This also was the sixth no-hitter in the majors this season, three of them at Safeco Field. Humber threw his gem in Seattle, then six Mariners pitchers combined to hold the Los Angeles Dodgers hitless at the park on June 8.
For the Rays, it was an all-too-familiar feeling. This was the third time in four seasons they had a perfect game pitched against them, following efforts by Dallas Braden in 2010 and Mark Buehrle in 2009.
"I don't have any words to explain this," Hernandez said to the crowd, speaking on the field after the final out. "I've been working so hard to throw one and today is for you guys."
Desmond Jennings pinch hit for Jose Lobaton to open the ninth. Hernandez got ahead 1-2 before Jennings fouled off two straight and Hernandez fanned him on a 92 mph fastball down in the zone. Jeff Keppinger batted for Elliot Johnson and grounded out to shortstop on a 1-2 pitch.
With one out to go, Sean Rodriguez got ahead 2-0 in the count. After circling the mound, Hernandez came back with two straight breaking balls for strikes and ended perfection with a called third strike on his 113th pitch.
"I went 2-0 and I just took a little walk, took a break and he called a slider. I had been following him the whole game, so I threw a slider and he swing," Hernandez said. "It was a good thing I followed this guy."
Hernandez (11-5) threw his arms up to the sky and was mobbed by teammates at the pitcher's mound. He embraced catcher John Jaso for a few seconds and then shared hugs with the rest of his teammates.
"It was in my mind, the whole game, it was in my mind," Hernandez said.
Hernandez likes to wear his hat crooked to the side ? many of his pitches weren't very straight, either.
The 26-year-old Venezuelan right-hander had the Rays swinging over his sharp curve all afternoon, with Evan Longoria, Ben Zobrist and Carlos Pena each striking out in the eighth chasing breaking balls.
With a fastball in the mid-90s mph and an effective change, Hernandez simply wasn't hittable. He also wasn't about to walk anyone, and got the final out after starting off Rodriguez with two balls.
The Rays seemed to try another technique to disrupt Hernandez, and that also failed. With two outs in the seventh, manager Joe Maddon came out to argue after plate umpire Rob Drake called strike one on a borderline pitch to Matt Joyce. Maddon stuck around for a minute or so to argue and when he left, Hernandez was still right in rhythm.
"I was yelling at Joe to get ... out of there," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Reuters) - President Barack Obama launched an attack Wednesday on congressman Paul Ryan's plan to reform Medicare, a divisive issue that has obscured Republican attempts to make the White House election campaign all about jobs.
Mitt Romney's announcement of Ryan as his vice presidential running mate on Saturday energized the Republican campaign but brought the health insurance program into focus due to the Wisconsin congressman's controversial budget plan that includes reform of Medicare.
"They want to turn Medicare into a voucher program," Obama told a crowd in Dubuque, Iowa. "And because the voucher wouldn't keep up with costs, the plan ... would force seniors to pay an extra $6,400 a year, and I assume they don't have it."
Ryan proposes giving retirees an allowance to buy their own coverage. Democrats say that would raise costs for seniors and reduce the quality of their care.
The United States traditionally has low voter turnout on election day in November, but senior citizens go to the polls in droves, making them a highly sought-after constituency.
Winning Florida, another battleground state with a high population of elderly Americans who rely on Medicare, may be easier for the Obama team on November 6 because of Ryan's addition to the ticket.
"I have strengthened Medicare," Obama said. "I've proposed reforms that will save Medicare money by getting rid of wasteful spending in the health care system. Reforms that will not touch your Medicare benefits, not by a dime."
OBAMACARE AND MEDICARE
Romney, however, is fighting back with criticism that Obama cut $716 billion from Medicare to help fund his 2010 healthcare reform legislation, known as Obamacare.
"If I become president, I'm going to restore that $716 billion to the Medicare trust fund so that current seniors can know that the trust fund is not being raided and get Medicare on track to be solvent long-term on a permanent basis," Romney said on "CBS This Morning" on Wednesday.
Government funds set aside for Medicare are expected to be exhausted in 2024.
Romney tried to distance himself from Ryan's budget plan, criticized by Democrats as relying on harsh spending cuts that would ruin the safety net for the poor and elderly.
The former governor of Massachusetts said he, not Ryan, would direct economic policy.
"First of all, Congressman Ryan has joined my campaign, and his campaign is my campaign now, and we're on exactly the same page," he said.
A Gallup survey on Wednesday showed Romney received no immediate poll boost from taking Ryan onto his team, although he leads Obama by 47-45 percent among registered voters.
The fight over Medicare and other fiscal issues overshadows Romney's message that Obama is failing to tame unemployment, running at 8.3 percent, and does not understand business.
Back-and-forth accusations over dishonest ads and rhetorical low blows also kept the jobs issue on the margins of the campaign.
"We're now in attack and blame, smear and fear. The president doesn't have a record to run on...People are going to see through this, I just don't think people are going to fall for this time around," Ryan told the Sean Hannity radio show.
Vice President Joe Biden triggered outrage from Romney on Tuesday by saying the Republican would put people "in chains" if elected president.

(Reuters) - J.C. Penney Co Inc
While traffic was still down in the first several days since the company tweaked a controversial pricing strategy that was blamed for driving away customers, the decline has eased to 7 percent from a 10 percent drop in the second quarter and a 12 percent decline in the first quarter.
Chief Executive Ron Johnson's assurances Friday that the retailer has enough cash to execute its turnaround also cheered investors, Morningstar analyst Paul Swinand.
Penney, which was downgraded by some ratings agencies during the quarter, said it would have $1 billion in cash at the end of the fiscal year.
Shares of J.C. Penney, which includes activist investor William Ackman as a shareholder, rose 10 percent to $24.32 Friday morning, erasing an earlier drop.
Still, sales at stores open at least a year, or same-store sales, fell 21.7 percent in the second quarter ended July 28, steeper than the 17.4 percent drop analysts expected, according to Thomson Reuters.
Total revenues tumbled 22.6 percent to $3.02 billion during the second quarter, also below Wall Street's low expectations.
In February, Penney largely eliminated the use of coupons and discounts in favor of a strategy of everyday low prices. The move cost the 102-year-old retailer many shoppers and led to an 18.9 percent drop in same-store sales in the first quarter.
Last week, Penney debuted the first of its boutiques within a store, the other piece of its transformation that will eventually see each store carved into a collection of 100 spaces for brands such as Levi's, Jonathan Adler, and Betsey Johnson.
Chief Executive Ron Johnson, the man who built up Apple Inc's retail chain and the architect of Penney's turnaround strategy, vowed to stay the course.
"While business continues to be softer than anticipated, we are confident the transformation of JCPenney is on track," Johnson said in a statement, adding that Penney is positioned to grow again in 2013.
Faced with a mutiny by customers long trained to look for sales and use coupons, Johnson has backtracked a bit in recent weeks, making concessions like using the word "clearance" to denote items on sale and simplifying pricing to two levels rather than three.
Many experts say Johnson needs to make more concessions on his pricing ahead of the crucial holiday season, as Penney faces pressure from Macy's Inc
Penney customers are typically more price-sensitive than those of Macy's.
"I am very skeptical as to whether he understands that the J.C. Penney customer is looking for value and perceives value only with couponing," said Walter Loeb, president of Loeb Associates, management consultants to the retail industry.
"As long as Macy's keeps banging away, I don't think he has a ghost of chance."
On Wednesday Macy's reported second-quarter same-store sales were up 3 percent.
A visit to the Levi's shop at the Penney in Manhattan on Tuesday found the store busier than on earlier trips. Employees were armed with iPad computer tablets to ring up shoppers, and clearly marked signs told shoppers what was on sale.
DEEP LOSS
Penney reported a net loss of $147 million, or 67 cents per share, for the second quarter ended July 28, compared with a profit of $14 million, or 7 cents per share, a year before.
Excluding certain items, Penney lost 50 cents per share, compared with analysts' projection for a loss of 25 cents.
The company withdrew its full-year forecast, which it no longer expects to achieve.
Penney's poor sales forced the retailer to mark down unsold items, knocking down its gross margin 5.1 points to 33.2 percent of sales.
Sales also were hurt when it pulled back on advertising in late June and July as it rethought its pricing and marketing for back-to-school - just as business was picking up at Macy's and Kohl's.
But the company, which has laid off hundreds of workers at its headquarters and at stores, said it expects savings to exceed $900 million by the end of the year.

The?recent decision by Durban High Court Judge Esther Steyn to allow the service of a notice on an individual via their Facebook page has been reported to be a first in South Africa ? if not the continent.? However, a local legal expert says it is important to keep the ruling in perspective and, while it sets a precedent for future possible application, it does not imply widespread and automatic application.
?
Following the exchange of pleadings in the matter of Cecil Schickerling vs Pieter Odendaal Kitchens, in which Cecil Schickerling is suing Pieter Odendaal for R126 700 over the sale of a woodworking machine, the trial was scheduled to be heard in court at the end of August.
However, when Odendaal?s legal representatives reportedly officially withdrew before the allocation of a specific trial date, all subsequent attempts to contact the client in accordance with the rules of the court proved unsuccessful.
This led to an attempt to locate Odendaal via Facebook and eventually the ruling that this channel could serve as a mechanism for the issuing of notice, in addition to the advertisement of notice via publication, as per requirements of the rules of the court.
Independent Online quoted Shickerling as saying that ?service by Facebook by way of a message sent to an inbox is equivalent to email and would be the most likely way that a communication of the trial date and pre-trial procedures will come to the other party?s attention.?
According to the report advocate Mark Harcourt had said that while there had been vast changes in technology, courts were generally slow in adapting.
?However, legal articles seemed to indicate that courts overseas were increasingly willing to accept service through Facebook and other social networking platforms,? he said.
Experts in cyber-law and application have described the event as ?an advance for South Africa?
Paul Jacobson, Director of web.tech.law and Web & Digital Media Lawyer, specialises in digital and social media related law.
According to Jacobson this specific incident is significant because it is an apparent openness on the part of the judiciary to recognise a variety of digital platforms and channels as appropriate in court proceedings, where the particular case merits it.
Jacobson points out that the court rules for the High Courts have changed since 27 July 2012, one of these being an extension of Chapter 3 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act to service of court documents on litigants by email or fax.
This Chapter deals with the legal requirements of data messages and communications using data messages.
Webtechlaw quotes an excerpt from this legislation:
?Legal ?Legal recognition of data messages
11. (1) Information is not without legal force and effect merely on the grounds that it is wholly or partly in the form of a data message.
(2) Information is not without legal force and effect merely on the grounds that it is not contained in the data message purporting to give rise to such legal force and effect, but is merely referred to in such data message.
(3) Information incorporated into an agreement and that is not in the public domain is regarded as having been incorporated into a data message if such information is ?
(a) referred to in a way in which a reasonable person would have noticed the reference thereto and incorporation thereof; and
(b) accessible in a form in which it may be read, stored and retrieved by the other party, whether electronically or as a computer printout as long as such information is reasonably capable of being reduced to electronic form by the party incorporating it.?
The ruling by Judge Steyn is significant to the country?s legal development says Jacobson.
?It extends the ECT Act?s recognition of digital messages to court processes and may even make some of the court procedures more effective because of the highly personal nature of these digital channels,? he comments.
Asked whether it is likely that social networking and social media will continue to influence the legal space inSouth Africa, Jacobson said ?absolutely?.
?As more people use social services on the Web, it will have a very real impact on the legal sector simply because issues will increasingly arise in that digital context or in such a way that relates to these services. It?s unavoidable,? he added.
Tjerk Damstra, a Pretoria-based attorney, said that whilst he agreed with the decision by Judge Steyn and acknowledged the significance, it did not represent a blanket ruling on the conventions of the rules of the court, nor could Facebook or social networks be assumed to be a legitimate channel in South African courts.
?Legal representatives would, in future, still be required to approach the court to argue for the use of these mechanisms in the due process that is prescribed by the rules of the court. It cannot be assumed that these channels will always be recognised and accepted in every case,? he said.
According to a written explanation of her decision, reported online, Judge Steyn said that changes in communication technology have increased and it is not unreasonable to expect the law to recognise such changes and accommodate it.

The battle lines were drawn early Monday. ?ESPN?s Ed Werder, Adam Schefter, and Chris Mortenson jointly reported that the NFL has offered to slice Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma?s suspension from 16 games to eight. ?The NFL denied the report, adamantly.
Werder addressed the situation during an appearance on ESPN?s NFL Live.
?As we reported, settlement discussions have taken place,? Werder said. ??Was there a formal offer?? Was there a hypothetical offer? ?I don?t think anybody can be quite sure exactly the form this took.? And while the NFL has vehemently denied the accuracy of the story at all, I can tell you that the other side ? the sources who provided this information to us last night ? have been equally adamant that we stand our ground, that the information is correct, that there have been settlement discussions, and that the NFL has offered to significantly lessen Jonathan Vilma?s suspension is he agrees to drop the defamation suit.?
That?s a fair and accurate response. ?And Werder maybe should have stopped right there. ?Because he thereafter opted to riff, and it made him seem more than a little defensive.
?Now, lawyers are obviously expert and make millions of dollars manipulating semantics so there?s no question some of that may be involved here,? Werder said, with a gratuitously inaccurate generalization that: ?(1) all lawyers are rich; and (2) all lawyers manipulate semantics. ?(Actually, only the rich ones do.) ??And as a reporter I can tell you that, you know, the Cowboys vehemently denied my Terrell Owens story a couple of years ago and insisted Jerry Jones did that he remain on the team, and three months later he was released, despite an enormous salary cap hit.?
First, the cap hit actually wasn?t enormous. ?Second, it appears that Jerry Jones possibly has purchased the spot next to Cowboy Chris?inside Werder?s head.
We don?t doubt the accuracy of the Werdscheftenson report. ?And we think that the dispute is a matter of semantics. ?No formal offer was made, but an eight-game reduction was (and still may be) available.
Still, Werder may have gone a bit too far in painting lawyers with a broad brush and then pointing to a three-year-old scoreboard.

The cluster of major earthquakes that struck the globe during the past decade can be explained by nothing more than random chance, researchers say in a new study.
Since 2004, devastating quakes have rocked Sumatra, Chile, Haiti and Japan, leading to speculation that we might be living in an age of great earthquakes, similar to a global cluster of temblors seen in the 1960s. Some researchers have even suggested that large quakes are linked across the globe, possibly triggering each other.
"We were curious as to whether or not earthquakes 'communicate' at global distances," researcher Tom Parsons, a seismologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif., told OurAmazingPlanet.
Science news from NBCNews.com
Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The Olympics is a time to celebrate the world's fastest and strongest humans, but you can rely on conservationists to put the best of human performance in perspective.
To see if the quake clusters of the 1960s and 2000s were part of a pattern, researchers looked at the timing between the world's largest earthquakes ? magnitude 8.3 and above ? at one-year intervals during the past 100 years. They compared these real quakes with simulated lists of large quakes with intervals between these quakes that one might expect from random processes. [ Video: What Earthquake 'Magnitude' Means ]
The timing seen between real-life large quakes was similar to what might be expected from randomness, the researchers found.
"The cluster seen in the last decade can be ruled out as random chance," Parsons said. "Yes, it's odd, but not anything one might not expect from a random process, where this kind of clustering is quite typical. If you think about flipping a coin multiple times, the pattern isn't just heads-tails-heads-tails ? there are typically a few of each in a row."
These findings might disappoint some, because if large quakes were influencing others across the globe, such activity might give scientists a way to predict whether more quakes were on the way.
Still, "I could say that it's not actually disappointing ? if quakes were communicating at global distances, after a big quake, the entire planet would essentially be an aftershock zone," Parsons said. "Every time there was a quake in Sumatra, my hazard might go up if I was in Europe. That appears to not be the case, which is overall good news."
Curiously, past research has shown that smaller earthquakes do apparently communicate at global distances. "After big quakes, you do see lots of micro-tremors all over the planet, but for some reason they don't seem to grow into big earthquakes," Parsons said. "We want to learn more about why some earthquakes grow big and why they don't."
Parsons and his colleague Eric Geist detailed their findings online Thursday in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.

The world's biggest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev on Tuesday posted increased second-quarter profits, but logged a fall in the key measure of its earnings.
On the Brussels stock exchange at around 0800 GMT, the company's shares were trading down nearly 4.0 percent.
The company logged profits of $1.961 billion (1.6 billion euros), as against $1.45 billion for the same period one year earlier, well ahead of expectations among analysts polled by DowJones.
However, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell to $3.594 billion dollars from $3.747 billion a year earlier.
Falling US wholesale deliveries and rising distribution costs in the United States were cited by the company.
Sales also fell slightly, to $9.871 billion from $9.952 billion, although sales of key brand Budweiser rose by 1.0 percent with regional big brands in China and Brazil also growing.

kim richards robert hegyes mary louise parker mary louise parker cher morgellons nhl all star draft
It got hot and heavy last night and we still have several hours to go today, so let?s take a look at who has moved and where at the 2012 trade deadline.
7/30/12: The Pirates acquired OF Travis Snider from the Toronto Blue Jays for RHP Brad Lincoln: Quick Take: A guy who was once the Jays? top hitting prospect but has never been able to do it in the bigs could use the change of scenery.
7/30/12: The Blue Jays?Acquired RHP Steve Delabar from the Seattle Mariners for OF Eric Thames. Quick Take: Eric Thames: not likely to power the M?s to the playoffs this year. Sorry, folks!
7/30/12: The Dodgers acquired RHP Brandon League from the Seattle Mariners for OF Leon Landry and RHP Logan Bawcom. Quick Take: Bullpen help for the Dodgers when their division rival Giants could use the same? Delicious.
7/30/12: The Braves?Acquired LHP Paul Maholm, OF Reed Johnson and cash considerations from the Chicago Cubs for RHP Arodys Vizcaino and RHP Jaye Chapman.?Quick Take: The Braves bolster their rotation and add a useful bat in Johnson. The Cubs get something of a lottery ticket in Vizcaino with all of its attendant risks and potential rewards.
7/30/12: The Cubs trade C Geovany Soto to the Rangers for RHP?Jacob Brigham. Quick Take: Lots of catching congestion in Texas. Figure it means the end of the??Yorvit Torrealba?era. Gentlemen, please doff your caps in respect.
7/29/12: The Brewers traded C George Kottaras to Oakland for RHP Fautino De Los Santos. Quick Take: Kottaras woulda been a great Moneyball-era pickup for the A?s. Old habits die hard.
7/29/12: The Diamondbacks traded OF Marc Krauss and OF Bobby Borchering to Houston for 3B Chris Johnson. Quick Take: A nice bat for the Dbacks.
7/28/12: The White Sox acquired LHP Francisco Liriano from the Minnesota Twins for INF Eduardo Escobar and LHP Pedro Hernandez. Quick Take: Liriano is an enigma at this point, capable of a shutdown outing of, more commonly, a facepalm outing. But the Sox need rotation depth to get out of the ?Peavy and Sale and pray for hail? pattern they were developing in the first half.
7/25/12: The Marlins traded 3B Hanley Ramirez and LHP Randy Choate to the Dodgers for RHP Nathan Eovaldi and RHP Scott McGough. Quick Take: If the Dodgers got pre-2011 Hanley Ramirez it?s a game-changer in the west. If not, well, at least it should be fun to see how Don Mattingly handles discipline.
7/27/12: The Angels Acquire RHP Zack Greinke from the Brewers for SS?Jean Segura, RHP?Ariel Pena and RHP Johnny Hellweg. Quick Take: The Angels get an ace, but he may only be a rental and they paid a high price in return: Segura, Pena and Hellweg were their second, fourth and ninth best prospects coming in to the season.
7/24/12: The Pirates acquired LHP Wandy Rodriguez and cash from the Astros for LHP Rudy Owens, LHP Colton Cain and OF Robbie Grossman. Quick Take: The Pirates are goin? for it and a solid starter that Rodriguez is the kind of pickup the fans needed to see.
7/24/12: The Indians traded RHP Jose De La Torre to Boston for INF/OF Brent Lillibridge. Quick Take: In the future, Brent Lillibridge will be a utility player for every team for fifteen minutes.
7/23/12: The Mariners traded OF Ichiro Suzuki and cash considerations to the Yankees for RHP D.J. Mitchell and RHP Danny Farquhar. Quick Take: Take the famous name off this deal and the Yankees got something they needed ? a defensive-oriented outfielder with some speed and the ability to put the ball in play ? in exchange for organization depth and not much more. The key: getting Raul Ibanez out of left field every day. Mission accomplished.
7/23/12: The Tigers acquired RHP Anibal Sanchez, 2B Omar Infante and a competitive balance lottery draft choice between the first and second round of the 2013 amateur draft from the Miami Marlins for RHP Jacob Turner, LHP Brian Flynn, C Rob Brantly and a competitive ballance lottery draft choice between the second and third round of the 2013 amateur draft. Quick Take: Dave Dombrowski addresses the Tigers two biggest need ? a starter and a second baseman ? in one fell swoop. Jacob Turner could be missed, but not in the 2012 pennant race, and that?s where the Tigers are now.
7/21/12: The White Sox acquired RHP Brett Myers and cash considerations from Houston for RHP Matt Heidenreich and LHP Blair Walters and a player to be named. Quick Take: I guess weirder things have happened that a guy like Brett Myers being the closer for a World Series winning team, but I just can?t think of it right now.
7/20/12: The Astros acquired RHP Francisco Cordero, OF Ben Francisco, RHP Joe Musgrove, RHP Asher Wojciechowski, LHP David Rollins, C Carlos Perez and a player to be named for RHP Brandon Lyon, LHP J.A. Happ and RHP David Carpenter from Toronto. Quick Take: Sound and fury, signifying nothing. Easily the most talent-light giant trade in baseball history.
7/20/12: The Mets?traded INF Omar Quintanilla to the Orioles for cash. Quick Take: Take the money, leave the canolis.
7/20/12: The Rockies traded RHP Jeremy Guthrie to the Royals for LHP Jonathan Sanchez. Quick Take: One man?s trash is another man?s treasure. Another man isn?t going to go too crazy talking up his treasure, though. At least not in this case.
7/14/12: The Reds traded INF Paul Janish to Atlanta for RHP Todd Redmond. Quick Take: The Braves trading for a white veteran middle infielder is about the most predictable thing ever.
7/4/12: The Astros acquired INF Matt Dominguez and LHP Rob Rasmussen from Miami for 1B Carlos Lee. Quick Take: Remember when the Marlins thought they were buyers? Yeah, that seemed like eons ago.
7/1/12: The Yankees acquired RHP Chad Qualls from Philadelphia for a player to be named. Quick Take: I still don?t quite get this one. Qualls is just keeping Joba Chamberlain?s seat warm.
6/30/12: The Phillies traded 1B Jim Thome to Baltimore for RHP Kyle Simon and C Gabriel Lino. Quick Take: Jim Thome will play until he?s 60 and will mash taters for every team in baseball at least once.
