Candidates for Madison mayor square off in debate

There was a showdown Monday night in Madison between the candidates for mayor.

Longtime Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler faced off against challenger John Bell Crosby during a debate held at Madison Central High School. The two candidates went back and forth over more than a dozen issues.

"You look at his record and you see what his track record is. And you ask yourself, 'Do I want that?'" Hawkins-Butler said.

"Folks, we need to get more fiscally secure in this town. We've got to get safer in this town," Crosby said.

Hawkins Butler touted her record and said there's nothing wrong with Madison. Crosby argued that Madison must move forward.

Crosby claimed that he's had trouble getting a campaign headquarters because of a home field advantage.

"My best answer to that is intimidation and humiliation. That force that's out there, an unseen force, I mean. The best way to put it is the headquarters that she has right now, I was turned down on," Crosby said.

"He says he hasn't been able to get a campaign headquarters because of intimidation. What do you say to that?" 16 WAPT's Erin Kelly asked the mayor.

"I have no answer. I just think it's ridiculous. I'm not going there," Hawkins Butler said.

The candidates battled it out over issues like economic growth, the city's look and parks and recreation.
