Galeshewe - The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Northern Cape MEC for Agriculture Norman Shushu on Saturday launched Arbor Week by planting fruit trees, establishing vegetable gardens and distributing seed packs and seedlings to local communities.
The MEC visited a communal organic vegetable garden in Platfontein where he planted vegetables which will assist in alleviating poverty and contributing towards food security in the area.
Two-hundred households within the Xun and Khwen communities were given vegetable seed packs and seedlings.
Shushu said the establishment of vegetable gardens would help rural communities produce food in their own backyard gardens and thereby fight soaring food prices.
'It is less expensive for communities to produce their own food through backyard gardens as this can help to fight the current high food prices. Most importantly, we also want our people to understand the role that trees play in our environment and the role they play in our lives,' he said.
A commemorative plaque in honour of all the people who dedicated their lives to freedom, community upliftment and nation building in the province was also unveiled to mark in the occasion. The plaque was unveiled at Galeshewe stadium, outside Kimberley on behalf of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister, Tina Joemat-Pettersson.
At the stadium, Shushu participated in the planting of 20 olive trees before addressing the main Arbor Week launch event. About 2 000 more fruit trees were planted and distributed in the Sol Plaatjie Municipality.
Addressing the people, the MEC said if the current environmental degradation continued then human life would become unsustainable.
'The destruction of the environment is leading to the destruction of humanity, so if we are to have a sustainable future, it means we must look after our trees, our forests and our environment. Without the protection of the environment, there is no future, that's why all of us are encouraged to join government and our partners to ensure that we make our cities and townships green,' he said.
Another highlight of the launch of Arbor Week was the Arbor City Awards, introduced to promote the greening of cities and towns in the 283 local and eight metropolitan municipalities across the country. This award is given to cities and towns that go the extra mile to green the areas under their jurisdiction.
The Khara Hais local municipality, which governs the town of Upington in the Northern Cape, won the local municipal category, while the City of Johannesburg won in the metropolitan category.
Both the City of Johannesburg and Khara Hais received a R300,000 cash prize, trophy and certificate.
Khara Hais council speaker, Thomas Basson said: 'To us this is a very special award because we are leaders in the area of greening both at the provincial and national level. This award will encourage us to green more areas in the disadvantaged communities within our municipal area.'
Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for community development and city parks, Councillor Chris Vondo, said: 'As a city, we are committed to planting more trees and greening all areas within our city, especially in the historically disadvantaged communities.
'This award is a testimony that we qualify to be measured with the best cities in the world.'
Arbor Day was first celebrated by South Africa in 1983. The day has since been extended from Arbor Day to National Arbor Week, held in the first week of September.
The theme for this year's campaign is 'Our Forests?Our Future'. It affords government, the private sector, non-governmental and community-based organisations and the public to be involved in greening their communities.
Greening refers to an integrated approach to the planting, care and management of all vegetation in urban and rural areas, to secure multiple benefits for communities.
In the South African context, greening takes place in towns, townships and informal settlements specifically because in the past these areas were disadvantaged in terms of planning for parks as well as tree planting in streets and open spaces.
Government and its partners will use National Arbor Week to undertake a major national awareness programme that will bring attention to the value of trees, especially in the many disadvantaged communities who often live in barren and water-stressed areas.
Trees play a significant role in social and economic development, poverty alleviation and job creation. Forestry contributes towards our country's growth and development.
Planting gardens and fruit trees may also improve access to nutritious food, encourage healthy diet choices and play a significant role in household food security when integrated with other programmes.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The U.S. military has halted the training of some Afghan forces while it digs deeper into their background following a surge of attacks by soldiers and police on their international partners, officials said Sunday.
The move only puts about 1,000 Afghan trainees into limbo, a small fraction of the country's security forces. But it shows how these attacks have the potential to derail the U.S.-Afghan handover of security so essential to the international drawdown strategy.
Officials say that the international coalition ultimately hopes to recheck the backgrounds of the entire 350,000-strong Afghan army and police.
The United States and its allies are pushing to have Afghan forces take over security for the country by the end of 2014. This effort has been imperiled by the spike in insider attacks that have killed 45 international service members this year, most of them Americans. There were at least 12 such attacks in August alone, resulting in 15 deaths.
The attacks are straining an alliance already stretched by a tense relationship with a notoriously corrupt Afghan government and disagreements over NATO tactics that Kabul claims endanger civilians.
Coalition authorities have said about 25 percent of this year's insider attacks had confirmed or suspected links to the Taliban. The militants have sometimes infiltrated the ranks of the Afghan army and police and in other cases are believed to have coerced or otherwise persuaded legitimate members to turn on their coalition partners.
NATO is currently training thousands of Afghans. The 1,000 put into limbo by the training freeze are part of a 16,000-strong unit dubbed the Afghan Local Police. They are actually much more of a government-backed militia, technically under the authority of the national police but operating independently.
They are the only force that the U.S. alone is in charge of training.
"With this increased interest in the insider threat, everybody started looking at it and saying: 'What can we do to make sure that all of our vetting processes are in place?' We're going through and looking at everything," said Lt. Col. Todd Harrell, a spokesman in Afghanistan for the U.S. special operations forces.
"It may take a month, it may take two months, we don't know," Harrell said.
The suspension was first reported by the Washington Post.
The international military coalition has tightened security in places where Afghans and their international colleagues operate together, but it is unclear if any of these efforts will be enough to avoid more turncoat shootings.
NATO spokesman Jamie Graybeal said the training suspension "is not the sum total of everything that we're doing." Other measures include a more intense vetting system for new recruits, increasing the number of people working in counter-intelligence, the re-vetting of Afghan soldiers as they return from leave, a ban on the sale of uniforms and the establishment of an anonymous reporting system, he said.
Harrel said that the ALP already in the field, who have already been trained, will continue to operate as normal. The government will also keep recruiting new members, he said.
Harrell also disclosed for the first time on Sunday that the Americans last month suspended operations by the Afghan special forces last month to re-vet those soldiers for any potential ties to insurgents or any other indications that they might turn on their allies. He said the suspension lasted less than two weeks and that the forces have since resumed operations.
Harrell said he was not aware of any Afghan troops who were suspended or flagged for monitoring in that round of re-vetting. The vast majority of insider attacks have been carried out by regular Afghan army and police, rather than by ALP or special forces.
The deputy commander of international forces in Afghanistan, Lt. Gen. Adrian Bradshaw of Britain, said in a statement that the actions taken by U.S. special operations forces are one part of a plan to re-vet the entire 350,000-member Afghan force.
"Much of this re-vetting task has already been completed and numbers of individuals, where vetting status has been found to be in doubt, have been suspended pending further investigation, or removed from the force," Bradshaw said in the statement. He said Afghan and coalition officials met Sunday to discuss what additional measures could be taken.
The most recent insider attack took place last week when an Afghan army soldier turned his gun on Australian soldiers, killing three of them and wounding two, the Australian military.
In further indications of the tensions between the U.S. and Kabul, Afghan President Hamid Karzai's office condemned an operation by international troops to catch the shooter, saying it resulted in the deaths of two civilians ? a 70-year-old man his 30-year-old son. Karzai's office said in a statement late Saturday that the operation took place without the coordination or approval of provincial authorities and violated an agreement that calls on Afghan troops to lead night raids.
Night raids have been a contentious issue between Afghan and international forces because the Karzai administration insists that they often end up killing civilians and antagonize the population, while the international coalition has maintained that they are necessary for rooting out insurgents. The U.S. military has struck an agreement to put Afghans at the head of its operations in villages, but there is no such agreement for the entire international coalition.
The international military alliance responded by saying that Afghan officials approved and supported the strike. NATO forces also said that they captured an insurgent leader in the raid.
In a related incident, NATO said it arrested a Taliban insurgent who was responsible for the May 12 shooting of two members of the British military in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province in the south.
At the time the man was a member of the Afghan police. An accomplice was shot and killed at the scene. The man, who was not further identified, was arrested along with another suspected insurgent on Aug. 30 in the Hisarak district of eastern Nangarhar province.

According to a report from video hosting and analytics startup Wistia, nearly 20% of all Internet users in the US are unable to watch HD video (~2 Mbps), on any device.
The study, which resulted when Wistia pulled data from some 500 million viewing sessions, sought to find out what users are actually experiencing.?These are approximations, mind you, but given the sample size, this information is worth a look.?Remember that?actual download speeds can be very different than stated connection speeds.
Clearly, users on dialup and mobile networks are bound to run into problems when trying to stream HD video, but?Wistia?found that even with high speed connections, there can still be major variances in download speeds anytime that connection is shared. Once again, although this information feels obvious, pinning down an actual statistic reveals a lot about the current state of US Internet users.
Diving deeper, according to the data, northeastern US has the highest capability of viewing HD content, while states such as Montana and Wyoming averaged siginificantly lower, with as little as 60% of the browsing population able to view HD.
A portion of this study directly targeted the workplace, and so, after gathering?data from ?25 well-established companies and organizations,? Wistia found that over 25% of users in these workplaces couldn?t watch streaming HD video.
?These organizations were identi?ed by publicly available IP address information, but we have chosen to report this data by organization type rather than name. This list includes internet ?rms, universities, Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and technology companies.
As far as what you should be taking away from this study, consider this: services like YouTube offer users the capability to lower their streaming quality, and other services even auto detect speeds automatically, but many self-hosted solutions push HD and fail entirely. In other words, HD video is lovely, but it can?t be the only thing you?re pushing as a business.

Obama: GOP ideas better suited for the last century

"You might as well have watched it on a black and white TV," Obama told a cheering crowd of thousands in Urbandale, outside Des Moines. The president was in Iowa ? a pivotal battleground state ? on the first stop of a push that will take him to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.
Obama recalled how his upset victory over Hillary Clinton in the Iowa caucuses four years ago had revived his campaign at a time when pundits were predicting his political demise. "And it will be you, Iowa, who will choose the path we take from here."
The president took several shots at the Republican convention in Tampa, noting Romney did not mention Afghanistan in his acceptance speech on Thursday, and accusing his political foes of having outdated ideas. "It was something to behold. Despite all the challenges that we face in this new century what they offered over those three days was, more often than not, an agenda that was better suited for the last century," he said. "It was a re-run. We'd seen it before."
"If you didn't DVR it, let me recap it for you: Everything's bad, it's Obama's fault, and Governor Romney is the only one who knows the secret to creating jobs and growing the economy," he said. "That was the pitch."
"And when Governor Romney had his chance to let you in on his secret, he did not offer a single new idea. Just retreads of the same old policies that have been sticking it to the middle class for years," Obama charged.
A spokesman for Mitt Romney's campaign, Ryan Williams, hit back.
"President Obama dubbed this trip the 'Road to Charlotte' but his policies have taken us on a road to declining incomes, higher unemployment and more uncertainty for the middle class. And in the face of a record of failure, he offered no new solutions, just misleading attacks," Williams said.
Obama's greatest vulnerability is the sour economy, still sputtering nearly four years after he took office vowing to fix it. Stubbornly high unemployment and sluggish growth weigh down his hopes for a second term. The president's response has been to argue that he inherited an economic crisis of historic dimensions and that Romney's approach is to favor the rich at the expense of the middle class.
Republican vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan explicitly took on that argument explicitly in his speech. "We are four years into this presidency. The issue is not the economy as Barack Obama inherited it, not the economy as he envisions it, but this economy as we are living it," he said.
