Good news for anyone living in a country where the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has yet to be banned from sale. Reports from SamMobile? indicate that the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the venerable Tab 10.1 is now complete, and has started to roll out to customers' devices. Updates have begun on the Wifi-only version in the UK, and the 3G version in Italy. In addition to bumping the 10.1-inch tablet up to the most recent version of Android that's not Jelly Bean, you can also expect some visual changes to the TouchWiz UI, bringing the software experience in line with Samsung's Tab 2 range.
If you've got an Italian Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 3G (GT-P7500) or a UK Wifi-only model (GT-P7510), you can update now by heading to Settings > About Tablet > Software Updates, or by plugging your tablet into a PC running Samsung's Kies desktop software. Alternatively, if you're feeling adventurous, you could flash the firmware directly onto any 3G Galaxy Tab 10.1 -- you'll find an ODIN-flashable version version over at the source link.
We'd recommend most Tab owners outside of Italy and the UK sit tight and wait for the official update to roll out, though. It's been eight months already, what's another few days?

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? An international team of researchers, including scientists from Wits University, have substantially increased the age at which we can trace the emergence of modern culture, all thanks to the San people of Africa.
The research by the team, consisting of scientists from South Africa, France, Italy, Norway, the USA and Britain, will be published in two articles online in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The paper titled "Early evidence of San material culture represented by organic artifacts from Border Cave, South Africa" was authored by Francesco d'Errico, Lucinda Backwell, Paola Villa, Ilaria Degano, Jeannette Lucejko, Marion Bamford, Thomas Higham, Maria Perla Colombini, and Peter Beaumont.
Doctor Backwell is a senior researcher in palaeoanthropology, and Professor Bamford a palaeobotanist at the Bernard Price Institute for Paleontological Research at Wits University.
"The dating and analysis of archaeological material discovered at Border Cave in South Africa, has allowed us to demonstrate that many elements of material culture that characterize the lifestyle of San hunter-gatherers in southern Africa, were part of the culture and technology of the inhabitants of this site 44,000 years ago," says Backwell.
A key question in human evolution is when in prehistory human cultures similar to ours emerged? Until now, most archaeologists believed that the oldest traces of San hunter-gatherer culture in southern Africa dates back 10,000, or at most 20,000 years.
The international team of researchers, led by Francesco d'Errico, Director of Research at the French National Research Centre, dated and directly analyzed objects from archaeological layers at Border Cave.
Located in the foothills of the Lebombo Mountains in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, the site has yielded exceptionally well-preserved organic material.
Backwell says their results have shown without a doubt that at around 44,000 years ago the people at Border Cave were using digging sticks weighted with perforated stones, like those traditionally used by the San.
"They adorned themselves with ostrich egg and marine shell beads, and notched bones for notational purposes. They fashioned fine bone points for use as awls and poisoned arrowheads. One point is decorated with a spiral groove filled with red ochre, which closely parallels similar marks that San make to identify their arrowheads when hunting," says Backwell.
Chemical analysis of residues on a wooden stick decorated with incisions reveals that, like San objects used for the same purpose, it was used to hold and carry a poison containing ricinoleic acid found in castor beans. This represents the earliest evidence for the use of poison.
A lump of beeswax, mixed with the resin of toxic Euphorbia, and possibly egg, was wrapped in vegetal fibers made from the inner bark of a woody plant. "This complex compound used for hafting arrowheads or tools, directly dated to 40,000 years ago, is the oldest known evidence of the use of beeswax," says Backwell.
Warthog tusks were shaped into awls and possibly spear heads. The use of small pieces of stone to arm hunting weapons is confirmed by the discovery of resin residue still adhering to some of the tools, which chemical analysis has identified as a suberin (waxy substance) produced from the sap of Podocarpus (yellowwood) trees.
The study of stone tools discovered in the same archaeological layers as the organic remains, and from older deposits, shows a gradual evolution in stone tool technology. Organic artifacts, unambiguously reminiscent of San material culture, appear relatively abruptly, highlighting an apparent mismatch in rates of cultural change. This finding supports the view that what we perceive today as "modern behavior" is the result of non-linear trajectories that may be better understood when documented at a regional scale.

When can the children decide what parent they want to live with?? This is a common question asked.? Parents must insure not to use their children as pawns against the other parent because doing so can lead to emotional and psychological harm to minor children involved.? During a divorce there will be anger, and hurt feelings but both parents must attempt to keep their children?s best interest in mind when creating a custody and visitation plan.
So what is the answer to our question? California Family Code ?3042, provides some guidance to help answer this question, in that it states that ?if a child is of sufficient age and capacity to reason so as to form an intelligent preference as to custody or visitation, the court shall consider, and give due weight, to the wishes of the child in making an order granting or modifying custody or visitation?.? This same code was amended to include a provision that if the child is 14 years of age or older and wants to talk to the Judge about custody and visitation, the child shall be permitted to do so, unless the court determines that it would not be in the best interest of the child. If the child is not permitted to speak then the court shall state the reasons on the record.
This same code then goes on to say that nothing in the section shall be interpreted to prevent a child younger than 14 from addressing the court about custody or visitation, if the Judge determines that it is appropriate and in the children?s best interest.? If the child is not allowed to speak the court shall provide an alternate form of obtaining the child?s input such as appointing an attorney for the child, a mediator or ordering an investigation.
As you can see there is no real easy answer to the question and no set age at which the child can decide or control with whom they will live.? There are many factors to consider in making custody and visitation orders.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) - Hope Solo will not be disciplined by the U.S. women's soccer team for her Twitter rant against NBC analyst and former player Brandi Chastain.
The goalkeeper met with coach Pia Sundhage and the team's captains Sunday. They discussed the desire to keep "a bubble" around the team during the Olympics. The coach also discussed the team's image with fans.
Solo took to Twitter on Saturday to criticize Chastain for comments made during the broadcast of the Americans' 3-0 win over Colombia. She told Chastain to "get more educated" and that "the game has changed from a decade ago."
Chastain refused to be drawn into the fray. She said: "I'm here to do my job, which is to be an honest and objective journalist at the Olympics, nothing more than that."

Relationships are precious and easily taken for granted.? It is?very easy to be distracted by this thing we call life and miss the best parts!?
About twelve (12) days ago I was sitting at the kitchen counter having lunch when the phone rang. My son called from California. He had had some surgery and was feeling worse rather than better. Instead of our planned social visit later in the month, I bought an airline ticket (thank you Alaska Airlines MVP Gold Desk)and headed to help.? While I was there, he underwent yet another surgery. So my planned weekend visit turned into a more lengthy stay. It was my deep honor to be there for him, to balance recovery, medication, child care, household chores, and meals.? It blessed me to simply be there, a quiet presense while he slept.? I am pleased to say that although pain management remains an issue, he is on the road to recovery.
I am back home.? Quite often it is difficult for me that my family and friends live so far away. This is one of those moments. I want them closer but that is not where life has us, yet.?People are always asking me how I have a close, loving, strong relationships and live states or continents apart. This is how I live.? I humbly offer my secrets to you:
These are a few?secrets that work for me.? I would love to hear what works for you.? It is never to late to start, or make it better!!?

Announced a couple of months ago, the water-resistant Sony Xperia Go has gone on sale in the UK, and is now available SIM-free, as well as subsidized on-contract through O2 UK. The Go is the follow-up to last year's Xperia Active, which won critical praise for its unique, rugged design (which at one point helped it survive being run over by a Jeep).
The Xperia Go is a little sleeker than last year's ruggedized Xperia, and it should be plenty fast too, with a 1Ghz dual-core ST Ericsson CPU inside. Unfortunately, though, it's yet another Sony phone launching on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and as we look for updates from ICS to Jelly Bean from other manufacturers, that's a big disappointment. Nevertheless, if you're not a power user, and you're after something a decent little water-resistant smartphone, it's worth a look. The Xperia Go is yours for £200 SIM-free at Expansys and Clove, and O2 offers it for free on 24-month contracts starting at £18.50 per month.

ScienceDaily (July 16, 2012) ? A new study details how a suite of web-based tools provides the research community with greatly improved capacity to compare data derived from large collections of genomic information against thousands of drugs. By comparing drugs and genetic targets, researchers can more easily identify pharmaceuticals that could be effective against different forms of cancer.
The newly updated software, called CellMiner, was built for use with the NCI-60, one of the most widely utilized collections of cancer cell samples employed in the testing of potential anti-cancer drugs. The tools, available free, provide rapid access to data from 22,379 genes catalogued in the NCI-60 and from 20,503 previously analyzed chemical compounds, including 102 U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs.
The study, written by the scientists that developed the tools at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, appeared in the July 16, 2012, issue of Cancer Research.
"Previously you would have to hire a bioinformatics team to sort through all of the data, but these tools put the entire database at the fingertips of any researcher," explained Yves Pommier, M.D., Ph.D., of the NCI's Center for Cancer Research. "These tools allow researchers to analyze drug responses as well as make comparisons from drug to drug and gene to gene."
Genomic sequencing and analysis have become increasingly important in biomedicine, but they are yielding data sets so vast that researchers may find it difficult to access and compare them. As new technologies emerge and more data are generated, tools to facilitate the comparative study of genes and potentially promising drugs will be of even greater importance. With the new tools, available at http://discover.nci.nih.gov/cellminer, researchers can compare patterns of drug activity and gene expression, not only to each other but also to other patterns of interest. CellMiner allows the input of large quantities of genomic and drug data, calculates correlations between genes and drug activity profiles, and identifies correlations that are statistically significant. Its data integration capacities are easier, faster, and more flexible than other available methods, and these tools can be adapted for use with other collections of data.
Researchers looking at a particular drug can use the tools to access data from previous experiments done on that drug and analyze how the drug relates to other drugs and various gene profiles. As a case example for this study, the researchers compared drug activity levels and gene expression patterns from previous research to identify an investigational compound, called NSC732298, which is not currently being studied for colon cancer, but could be a potential therapy for the disease based on a CellMiner gene-drug match. In the same exercise, the researchers were able to identify that a second investigational drug that is being tested for colon cancer, called selumetinib, might also be effective against melanoma.
"We're looking forward to seeing how other people are going to use this tool to look at gene co-regulation, regulation of gene expression, and the relationship between gene expression and cancer," said Pommier.
This work was supported by NCI's Center for Cancer Research and Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis under intramural project number ZIA BC 006150.

Many home buyers and real estate investors often look for foreclosed homes for sale to get a great deal in buying a home. These foreclosed properties are usually owned by mortgage companies or lending institutions and not by the homeowner themselves. These mortgage companies are very eager to get rid of the homes because their organization?s primary aim is to make money from home loans and not to sequester and own the properties. However, you have to keep in mind that buying a foreclosed home will not always give you a good deal. A lender usually does not exert effort in upgrading the property to sell it on a higher price. They normally sell it ?as is?.
First, we need to understand what foreclosure is. A foreclosure is a legal process where a mortgage company acquires the ownership of an estate (repossess the property). This occurs when the homeowner has failed to make payments, has defaulted, or violated the terms of their mortgage loan.
With the rising number of foreclosures in the market today, many of you would wonder how homes go into foreclosure. Below are the common reasons why homeowners fall into foreclosure:
Negative Equity
One of the common reasons why some home fall into foreclosure is negative equity. Negative equity usually happens when a homeowner buys a house using a mortgage and then the home prices start to drop. After the house purchase, the value of the home decreases below the value of the amount owed on the mortgage, causing negative equity. When this happens, the homeowner does simply give up paying their monthly mortgage. He decides to cut his losses and stop making payments.
Sub-Prime Mortgages
HUD allows giving loans to high-risk borrowers with little capability of keeping up the payments is another contributor to the increasing incidence of foreclosure. Creating risky loans generated significant profits through origination fees and selling the mortgages to investors, even if the homes had to be foreclosed on later.
Unemployment
Employment or job gives every person the financial capability to buy the food they want to consume, buy the clothes they want and pay for the mortgage and other utility bills.? Thus, losing a job can make someone financially vulnerable and makes it impossible for the homeowner to keep paying the mortgage.
Other Personal Reasons
Aside from the aforesaid reasons why homes go into foreclosure, some home owners lose their home due to unwanted circumstances in their lives. One of which is serious medical condition. Serious Illnesses can stop a person from continuing their job, paying for the hospital bills and medications can also drain their financial resources, as a result the home owner fails to pay for the monthly mortgage. Divorce is another reason why people lose their home through foreclosure. When a couple separate or have a divorce, one of the spouses who keep the house may not be able to afford paying the mortgage alone. Lastly, there are also people who fail to pay mortgage and lose their house because of their gambling or substance addictions who usually prefer spending their money to satisfy their habits instead of fulfilling their monthly obligation on paying their mortgage.

If you read my first article in this series, ?Building a Business Continuity Program,? you know that a Disaster (IT) Recovery Program is part of a larger Business Continuity Program.? Basically, a Disaster (IT) Recovery Program should be developed from the needs of the business, not developed in isolation using assumptions.? However, as a Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery expert, I?ve come to realize that many companies either do not have the time, the money, or the personnel to develop their Disaster (IT) Recovery Program properly. ScienceDaily (July 13, 2012) ? As striking as it is, the illusion of depth now routinely offered by 3-D movies is a paltry facsimile of a true three-dimensional visual experience. In the real world, as you move around an object, your perspective on it changes. But in a movie theater showing a 3-D movie, everyone in the audience has the same, fixed perspective -- and has to wear cumbersome glasses, to boot.
Despite impressive recent advances, holographic television, which would present images that vary with varying perspectives, probably remains some distance in the future. But in a new paper featured as a research highlight at this summer's Siggraph computer-graphics conference, the MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture group offers a new approach to multiple-perspective, glasses-free 3-D that could prove much more practical in the short term.
Instead of the complex hardware required to produce holograms, the Media Lab system, dubbed a Tensor Display, uses several layers of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), the technology currently found in most flat-panel TVs. To produce a convincing 3-D illusion, the LCDs would need to refresh at a rate of about 360 times a second, or 360 hertz. Such displays may not be far off: LCD TVs that boast 240-hertz refresh rates have already appeared on the market, just a few years after 120-hertz TVs made their debut.
"Holography works, it's beautiful, nothing can touch its quality," says Douglas Lanman, a postdoc at the Media Lab and one of the new paper's co-authors. "The problem, of course, is that holograms don't move. To make them move, you need to create a hologram in real time, and to do that, you need ? little tiny pixels, smaller than anything we can build at large volume at low cost. So the question is, what do we have now? We have LCDs. They're incredibly mature, and they're cheap."
Layers of research
The Nintendo 3DS -- a portable, glasses-free 3-D gaming device introduced last year -- uses two layered LCD screens to produce the illusion of depth, with the bottom screen simply displaying alternating dark and light bands. Two slightly offset images, which represent the different perspectives of the viewer's two eyes, are sliced up and interleaved on the top screen. The dark bands on the bottom screen block the light coming from the display's backlight in such a way that each eye sees only the image intended for it.
This technique is in fact more than a century old and produces a stereoscopic image, the type of single-perspective illusion familiar from 3-D movies. The bottom screen displays the same pattern of light and dark bands no matter the image on the top screen. But Lanman, graduate student Matthew Hirsch and professor Ramesh Raskar, who leads the Camera Culture group, reasoned that by tailoring the patterns displayed on the top and bottom screens to each other, they could filter the light emitted by the display in more sophisticated ways, creating an image that would change with varying perspectives. In a project they dubbed HR3D, they developed algorithms for generating the top and bottom patterns as well as a prototype display, which they presented at Siggraph Asia in 2010.
The problem is that, whereas a stereoscopic system such as a 3-D movie projector or the 3DS needs to display only two perspectives on a visual scene -- one for each eye -- the system the Media Lab researchers envisioned had to display hundreds of perspectives in order to accommodate a moving viewer. That was too much information to display at once, so for every frame of 3-D video, the HR3D screen in fact flickered 10 times, displaying slightly different patterns each time. With this approach, however, producing a convincing 3-D illusion would require displays with a 1,000-hertz refresh rate.
To get the refresh rate down to 360 hertz, the Tensor Display adds another LCD screen, which displays yet another pattern. That makes the problem of calculating the patterns exponentially more complex, however. In solving that problem, Raskar, Lanman and Hirsch were joined by Gordon Wetzstein, a new postdoc in the Camera Culture group.
The researchers' key insight was that, while some aspects of a scene change with the viewing angle, some do not. The pattern-calculating algorithms exploit this natural redundancy, reducing the amount of information that needs to be sent to the LCD screens and thus improving the resolution of the final image.
CT in reverse
As it turns out, the math behind the Tensor Display is similar to that behind computed tomography, or CT, an X-ray technique used to produce three-dimensional images of internal organs. In a CT scan, a sensor makes a slow circle around the subject, making a series of measurements of X-rays passing through the subject's body. Each measurement captures information about the composition of tissues at different distances from the sensor; finally, all the information is stitched together into a composite 3-D image.
"The way I like to think about it is, we're building a patient whose CT scan is the view," Lanman says.
At Siggraph, the Media Lab researchers will demonstrate a prototype Tensor Display that uses three LCD panels. They've also developed another prototype that uses only two panels, but between the panels they introduce a sheet of lenses that refract light left and right. The lenses were actually developed for stereoscopic display systems; an LCD panel beneath the lenses alternately displays one image intended for the left eye, which is diffracted to the left, and another for the right eye, which is diffracted to the right. The MIT display also takes advantage of the ability to project different patterns in different directions, but the chief purpose of the lenses is to widen the viewing angle of the display. With the three-panel version, the 3-D illusion is consistent within a viewing angle of 20 degrees, but with the refractive-lens version, the viewing angle expands to 50 degrees.
"The paper reveals how you would greatly improve the realism, and image depth, and physical simplicity of 3-D display systems, particularly those that don't require you to wear glasses," says Gregg Favalora, a principal at the engineering consultancy Optics for Hire and co-chair of the SPIE Stereoscopic Displays and Applications Conference. "It's only possible when you have these really good mathematicians and signal-processing people and optics experts all sitting in the same room."
"It's definitely suitable for commercial applications, because each component is commonplace, and it sounds easy to manufacture, so this ought to be something that a consumer-electronics company would license," Favalora adds. "Honestly, this is a really big deal."

KHAYELITSHA, South Africa (Reuters) - Beaten and set alight, Ncedile Gigi's unrecognizable remains have not been buried since March, when a mob fed up with poor policing took the law into their own hands, torching the 26-year-old in a crime-ridden South African township.
Accused of theft, Gigi was one of three men who had petrol-laced tyres shoved over their shoulders in Khayelitsha, a shanty town 40 km (25 miles) east of Cape Town.
The heat fused his body with that of another and the charred remains were then left on a sandy patch of ground where children normally play soccer - a macabre warning to others and a grim reminder of the social problems that plague Africa's biggest and most developed economy.
For South Africans, the violence also evokes the dark days of apartheid when suspected collaborators of the white-minority regime were executed by "necklace" - a car tyre wedged over the torso, followed by a can of petrol, and then a match.
Police removed the bodies a few hours after the attack but, five months later, have yet to release two of them for burial because they do not know which is which.
"The way my brother died is very painful. We are waiting for DNA tests," Gigi's older sister, Kholiswa, told Reuters in her home, a tin and wood shack. "Maybe if I was there I could try to stop them - maybe just a beating only and not go so far as to burn him."
The death of Gigi and 10 other young men in the township since January reflects an alarming loss of trust in the police in South Africa's slums, where rates of robbery, rape and murder are among the highest in the world.
"This is actually a deeply worrying trend for the police and government because citizens do not have faith in formal institutions and are resorting to violence," said Hennie van Vuuren, director of the Cape Town office for the Institute for Security Studies.
"It is very possible that some of the victims may well be innocent."
OLD PROBLEM, NEW COP
Mob justice has been an ugly part of township life for years, but the escalating violence in Khayelitsha - Cape Town's largest black township of 750,000 people - has attracted the attention of prosecutors and the new national police commissioner, Riah Phiyega, who took office a month ago.
Phiyega, South Africa's first woman police chief, is under pressure to restore credibility and boost morale in a scandal-plagued force. Sorting out Khayelitsha would be a step in the right direction.
Shiny new police vehicles are now patrolling the township's potholed streets, part of a visible policing strategy intended to deter crime.
But residents are skeptical, accusing the "men in blue" of tardy responses, bungled investigations and corruption.
"The police don't do their job," said Telford Thanduxolo, tending a small vegetable patch close to where Gigi was killed.
"And if the police fail to do their job, then the community must take over."
Most Khayelitsha residents live cheek by jowl in a squalid sea of shacks - unnumbered homes on nameless streets that are perfect for criminals, and a nightmare for police.
"What sets Khayelitsha apart is the disproportionately high level of crime to which its residents are subjected compared to other areas, combined with the failure of the police to prevent, combat and investigate crime effectively," the Women's Legal Centre, a rights group, said in a report in December.
PETTY CRIME, DEADLY PUNISHMENT
With unemployment in Khayelitsha estimated at 38 percent - higher than the 25 percent nationally - it doesn't take much for mobs of jobless men to form.
Word of a gang looking for a stolen mobile phone or wallet spreads quickly. Evidence is often an afterthought as the mob delivers its justice.
Foreigners from neighboring African countries or youths seen by the community as wayward are often picked out as suspects. Teenager Anele Gazi was one.
Seized on January 20, Gazi pleaded with the mob let him go because he was innocent, as rumors spread that he had been found with stolen goods. Incensed residents bound his hands and feet, put him on a couch doused with petrol and struck a match.
"Residents were singing. Some were chanting: ?Let him die, die like a dog'," an eyewitness told Reuters.
In this case, as with many of the mob justice killings, police rounded up a number of people suspected of the lynching, but the chances of securing any convictions is remote, with residents often refusing to cooperate with police.
"The difficulty often with those matters is there are a number of people involved and to link the individual suspects or accused to the actual killing from an evidentiary point of view is often difficult," said Rodney de Kock, the Western Cape's director of public prosecutions.
There have been some police breakthroughs in several of this year's cases, with one woman and 12 men facing charges from assault to kidnapping and murder.
But the wheels of South African justice grind slowly at the best of times, and few Khayelitsha residents are going to go out of their way to put the agents of an accepted vigilante justice system behind bars.
Only the victims' families want the killers brought to book.
"What they did is also commit a crime. There is nothing justifying what they did," Gigi's sister said.
"It's totally wrong."

If you want to kill yourself, I guess you have a right to do it. ? There?s a real question as to whether McDonald?s and Coca-Cola should be sponsoring the Olympics, where they are supposed to have only healthy things. We've got to do something about this, and they can have a march and make a joke out of it, but there's a story in the Post today where the hospitals are having to increase the size of their gurneys and strengthen them. They can't even handle the patients, some of the patients are so heavy. This is going to be worse than smoking ever was. ? If somebody wants to have a march, I suppose it?s funny, but it is so tragic what is happening that I will say, the humor kind of escapes me.
